Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow... {Winter Snowman Cake}

I don't think I've said this in awhile, BUT this is DEFINITELY one of my favorite cakes this year. This little snowgirl was for a 1st birthday for Anna Michael (the party theme was "Winter ONEderland" -- cute, right?). This cake turned out even better than the picture in my head (love it when that happens!) I love the little sparkley snowflakes floating down around her and her super cute rosey cheeks. I almost wish it were winter year round so I could make more of these cute little cakes!!!

So Tall {Giraffe Topper Cake}

My new found love in the confectionary world is molding chocolate... pretty much a combination of corn syrup and melted chocolate (yes, you can all say "ewwwwww") it is a DREAM to work with. I've been playing around with the stuff on my past few 3D figures and I have to say, I think they're pretty cute! I mean seriously... so cute...

Just add Abby... {Abby Cadabby Polka Dot Cake}

One regular dot cake... plus one Abby Cadabby candle... will equal one very happy second birthday for Callie. Callie's mom found a super cute matching Abby Cadabby themed candle which will be on top of this cake -- I'll try to post a pic of the final product if I get one :)

Dora Dora Dora the Explorer {Stacked Dora Cake}

If you have a child under 4, you have most certainly heard of Dora The Explorer. I'm actually a little surprised that this is only my second Dora themed cake! Love this one because it's so colorful!!

Flower Drops {Cream and Beige Anniversary Cake}

I've been wanting to do this design for awhile. I love that it's so planned and yet random with the lengths of the flower drops. I think this cake would be great in a lot of different color schemes.

Cocktails anyone? {Martini Glass Cake}

I've just recently discovered modeling chocolate - which is so much more fun to play with than fondant... I had so much fun making this girl relaxing in a martini glass. My favorite part is her little pearl necklace!

The Giving Tree {Shel Silverstein "Giving Tree" Cake}

Charis turns one this weekend - and her mom picked "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein as the theme. Okay - first, I haven't read that book in YEARS, and second, it almost brought me to tears reading it to my girls during my "design research time" last week. What a great book! Definitely will be adding it to our library on our next trip to the book store!

PS. This cake was so hard to capture in a picture since it was soooo tall (over 12 inches!) so, if you can't tell - the cute little heart inscription is Charis' initials "C.R.P." - and the little smash cupcake is just for her! I always love the little details!

Updated: Holiday Cake Calendar & Cake Truffles

Nov and Dec are filling up quickly! Hopefully you're on my calendar already if you're wanting a cake before the end of the year. If you're still planning -- the only weekends I have left for orders in Nov/Dec are Nov 19th, Dec 11th, Dec 18th.

If you're not in the market for a big cake -- consider cake truffles for a great little gift (perfect for teachers, neighbors, and hostess gifts for all those holiday parties).

UPDATE: Busy Busy!! Only room to schedule one more cake in 2010 - if you need one around December 18th let me know!

Now Playing... {IPOD Cake}

Our friend Ava got an IPOD for her 7th birthday... what goes better with an IPOD gift than an IPOD cake!! Of course... on her cake playlist "Happy Birthday to Ava."

Just add cake... {Dalmation and Hydrant Topper}

... a close up of two super cute toppers for a fireman party. This little dalmation turned out much cuter than I was expecting, isn't he adorable?

Super Mario {Mario Bros Game Cake}

So, remember way way way back when.... when having a plain old Nintendo was super cool.... and when having Super Mario Bros was even cooler? Apparently Mario is still cool, just much more technologically savvy this decade! William loves to play Mario on the Wii with his dad (yeah, pretty sure none of our dads ever played on the old Nintendo) - what a great idea for a cake!! Happy Birthday, William!

Garden revisited {White Picket Fence Garden}

Another garden cake... love these designs!! So fun! My favorite part of this one is the apple basket in the middle of the garden!

Weaving a Web {Spiderman Climbing Cake}

Superheros are all the rage these days... I think my girls even know most of them! The buildings in this design are both cake, windows are fondant, and the webs are molded with white chocolate. Spidey is the only thing non-edible (part of a wax candle)!

(PS. This is one of those cakes that looked better on the counter than in the photo, but you get the idea... and it's just more inspiration for me to learn how to use all the settings on my fancy camera... one day!!!)

Tis the Season... {Cowboys Football Jersey Cake}

... of football that is! Fall is my favorite season - I LOVE almost everything about fall - the cool crisp weather that makes only the tip of my nose just a little chilly, being able to ride in the car with the windows down, being outside without getting sweaty instantly, cooking more winter-y comfort food dinners, wearing JEANS after a horribly hot summer - my list could go on forever. The one thing I DON'T like about fall - the entrance of football season - don't get me wrong, I like football itself and I could happily watch a game or so a week - what drives me CRAZY is all of the "extracurricular" events that happen when football arrives - fantasy drafts, fantasy leagues, Sportscenter on steroids, "Game Day," announcers running off stats about stats. Oh my. It's everywhere ALL THE TIME!

However, my passion for cakes overrides my "non-passion" for football season. And thankfully I can get happy about football cakes :) This is my second already of the season, and I'm expecting these little football cakes will start becoming repeat orders...

Ariel Doll Cake {3D Ariel Cake}

Ariel all dressed up in her ball gown - she's decorated in 3 layers of fondant to create the petticoat look - sugar pearls were hand added to her underskirt - because really what girl doesn't like a little extra sparkle? I love how she turned out - hardly looks like a cake!

Xylophone {Toy Xylophone Cake}

Seems like every kid has one of these growing up.... and what a great theme for a kids party! (I am totally impressed by the creative moms in Charlotte!)

Sweet Peas {Pea Pod Twin Shower Cake}

I know you've heard the saying... like peas in a pod. What a cute way to welcome twin baby girls!

FBI {Family Moving Cake}

This cake is for a family moving out of town for a new job with the FBI. Seems simple enough now that I look at it all done - but believe it or not, it took awhile for me to come up with a look to incorporate everything. The little kids are my absolute favorite I've made... sooo cute!!

Pool Party {Pool Cake}

Ella is turning 2 this weekend and celebrating with a backyard pool party - she probably won't need an innertube in her inflatable pool and 3 inches of water - but I just couldn't resist!

Twin Cakes {Hello Kitty and Carolina Panther Smash Cakes}

Two mini cakes for Addie and Ty to celebrate turning 5. They do have to share the same birthdate - but they definitely don't have to share cakes!!

King of the Jungle {3D Lion Cake with Smash}

This is one of those cake designs that I've been wanting to do for a while - so a big thanks to my friend Melissa for giving me a reason to make it!! Her little boy Andrew turns one this week - so the cute little lion is just for him!!

Good news and bad news...

The good news is that I've been overwhelmed by cake orders in September - which means that if you're one of my faithful blog followers, there are lots of fun posts coming up.

The bad news is that since I've been overwhelmed by cake orders in September, my calendar is full and I won't be taking any more orders for the month. :( Hopefully everyone who wanted a cake is already on my books!! Plenty of spaces in October and November though - so let me know if you have any celebrations coming up!

At The Hop {1950s Theme Cake}

I have told Chris more than a few times that I was born in the wrong generation -- poodle skirts, mary janes, roller skates, soda shops, Elvis (in his younger years of course) -- oh man I would have LOVED growing up in the 50s! Lucky Candy - Happy Birthday!! (You can't see this very well in the pic, but there is a poodle painted on her skirt, she's wearing mary janes, AND she has a super cute bobbing ponytail.)

Need ideas??

Check out my new blog page "Design Ideas" (linked under the blog header)!!

I'm constantly coming across cute cake pics - some I search endlessly for, some are magazine clippings from doc offices, and sometimes I get them from virtual strangers who know I'm in the cake business.

This new page is a collection of a few of these "ideas" that I hold onto because they're cute, unique, clever, or just something that I want to do one day.

So - take a look - and let me know if you're ever in the market for the chicken cake. The girls and I think it's HYSTERICAL!

Moving... {Stacked Moving Boxes Cake}

Our friend Nikki moved into her own place this month - and she's having a party to celebrate!! The best part about these moving boxes is they are MUCH more fun to unpack :) Congratulations, Nikki!!

A plug...

I have lots of talented friends... Sarah is one of them. She was sweet enough to spend some time helping me create the logo that appears on my blog, on my cards, and on my cake boxes :) She's been doing custom graphic design for a long time, and has just assembled a site with some samples of her work.

If you're in the market for stationary, labels, logos, stamps, business cards - you name it she can do it! Click on over to her new blog and check it out!!

Berry Good {Strawberry Shortcake Cake}

She's small, she's sweet, she's cute and she LOVES strawberries... who's that you may ask??

My little Hannah of course!! A sweet Strawberry Shortcake design for my sweetie on her 4th birthday! (Oh my where has the time gone?)

This cake is all edible with the exception of the doll (thank you to McD's for having Strawberry Shortcake Happy Meals a few years ago!)

A Little Luau {Hawaiian Luau Cupcakes}

4 dozen cupcakes...

Plus palm trees, flip flops, and lei flowers....

Equals CUTE luau cupcakes!!

New Flavors!!

Just pulled some delicious samples out of the oven and am happy to say I have two new flavor offerings to officially add to my basics (vanilla, chocolate, almond):

Chocolate Chip (vanilla cake with mini chocolate chips) and
Peanut Butter Cup (chocolate cake with peanut butter chips) - YUM!!

Leah has declared Chocolate Chip as her new favorite! I have a few more flavor combos in the works (lemon, chocolate mint and maybe a carrot cake) so stay tuned!!

And the winner is...

Thanks for the posts and emails (sorry the comment function didn't work for so many of you... what can I say, cakes are my thing, not computers!)

So, the answers to the game (how many of the below went into my cake serving 215 this June):
Eggs: 33
Butter: 16.5 sticks (over 4 lbs!)
Pow Sugar: 12 lbs

And the winners are:
Stephanie guessed 40 eggs
Rebecca and Amy TIED guessing 16 sticks of butter
AND Rebecca guessed right on with 12 lbs of powdered sugar!!

Congrats girls!! Now I know who to call when I'm overwhelmed with orders :) I'll be in touch for delivery of a box of delicious cake truffles.

The game...

I've had some people email me that they can't post comments :( Not sure what's up with that, I just fiddled with the settings though, so that might help. I'll definitely include all your guesses via email to triciaharris@hotmail.com

So keep 'em coming!! I have some guesses that are pretty close... and some that are not... haha!

Hiatus... And a fun little game

Heading on vacation for 7 whole days -- sooooo excited!! So no cakes this or next weekend! I haven't had two weekends off since January!! So, for all you blog followers, a little game to keep you occupied during my hiatus...

A Cake Statistic Game --
So, the biggest cake I've done so far was the black and white wedding cake this June:
http://somethingsweetcakery.blogspot.com/2010/06/simple-elegent-and-huge.html

Here's the game - post a comment with your guesses for the stats below, the closest in each category wins a delicious sampling of cake truffles!! (Non-Charlotte folks, don't be shy - not sure how the truffles will travel by mail, but I'm willing to give it a try!) Post by next Tues, July 27th.

What you need to know - this cake served 215. It measured 20 inches tall. And weighed over 35 lbs (not including the stand). Happy Guessing:
  1. How many large eggs were used?
  2. How many sticks of butter (FYI, 1 stick = 1/2 cup)?
  3. How many lbs of powdered sugar to make the frosting?

Curious... {Curious George Cake with Balloons}

Don't you love something that never goes out of style? Curious George has been finding himself in precarious situations since 1940! 70 years, Amazing!! I'm pretty sure this little gumpaste George won't last more than 70 seconds!! What a fun theme for a birthday party!

Sugary Shoes {Gumpaste Shoes and Shoebox Cake}

First gumpaste high heels I've ever done - I love how they turned out! Jen's sweet hubby ordered this cake as a surprise to celebrate her 30th birthday this weekend... I can't wait to see her face at the big party! (You can't see this in the pics, but I had fun with the details on this cake - the UPC is her birthday, the brand is "est. 1980" her birthyear, and the shoes are "Made in New York" where Jen grew up. Love it!) PS. Thanks to Rodney Stoner for the awesome pic from the party!!!

G-O-A-L {3D Soccer Ball Cake}

A fun cake for our friend Rich who is a HUGE soccer fan... perfect for the big game this weekend! The soccer ball is covered in vanilla and chocolate fondant and the grass is piped in buttercream.

Chugga chugga... {Modern Train Cake}

... Choo choo!! Need I say more?? A cute little train for Beckett's 2nd birthday (with polka dots to match the plates)!

Dots and Hearts {Dot Cake with Hearts and Smash Present Cake}

A different take on what's becoming my signature cake design... the dot cake is back, but with little hearts here and there to celebrate Mackenzie's successful heart surgery and first birthday!!

Fight Like A Girl {Pink Ribbon Cake}

Amy, who goes to our church, has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. I don't know Amy well enough to know her favorite color, her favorite food, or her favorite book. But one of the things I do know about her is that she's surrounded by amazing friends, which means she must be pretty amazing herself! They ordered this cake for Amy to have tonight - if you want to read more of Amy's story, here's her Caringbridge site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/amypatwa

Simple and Elegant {Black and White Wedding Cake with Flowers}

Just a peek...

And another...

The finished product

Texas Hold 'Em {Poker Table Cake}

All right gentlemen - you know you've found a good bride when she orders you a poker theme for your groomscake!! The extra fun part of this cake is it's a real game to play out - the bride and groom each picked a hand - then someone finished the flop to see who won. The winning card is appropriately, the Ace of Hearts!

Climb Every Mountain... {Mountain Climbers Cake}

Just when I thought I was getting tired of making little figurines - I got to make these cute little guys this week. Anna and Ken are getting married this weekend, and Anna ordered this cute mountain climbing cake for Ken's groomscake. (Look close, he's climbing up the mountain with a flower in his hand for her - cute cute!)

Ribbit Ribbit {Small Frog Cake Topper}

What a cute little frog - just perfect for a smash cake!! Happy Birthday Ben!

Old School {Sprinkled Cupcakes}

Sometimes revisiting the old school version of a cupcake is the best thing ever... who can complain about sprinkles and frosting anyway?? (I did do a little twist though, and layered these sweet babies, so there is frosting for every single little bite! YUMMM!!)

Friday, June 11, 2010

Monkey Mania {Monkey Cupcakes and Smash Cakes}

I'm starting to realize that I need to take a class in photography - it's getting harder to capture the cuteness on film! This order was for 50 cupcakes and 2 smash cakes for a joint birthday party for 3 year olds Lucy Grace and Gavin. Couldn't get all the cupcakes in a pic, but ohhh it was cute to see them all sitting on the counter! (You have to look closely to see the cute little monkey noses and mouths.)

Daisy Cupcakes {Orange and Pink Daisy Cupcake Toppers}

75 daisy cupcake toppers by me + 75 cupcakes by cool mom Wendy = one great sugary flowery party for Lula Porter! (Thanks for sending me a pic of the final product, Wendy!)

Old MacDonald... {3D Barn Cake with Farm Animal Cupcakes}

I am in LOVE with this cake - yes, I confess the squealing you might have heard coming from my kitchen was not from my 3 year old - I ADORE these little farm animal cupcakes (I kept peeking after I finished, I couldn't help myself). The picture just doesn't even do them justice. I think the little piggy snouts are my favorite. Soooo cute!! Little Eloise loves the song Old MacDonald, so for her 1st birthday, she gets the whole barn all to herself to enjoy (aka. destroy).

And here's a closeup of the cuties -- oh my -- really too cute to eat!!
